Chickens for Poor Single Mothers

To impoverished, woman-headed households in Ethiopia, the cost to buy an animal is hopelessly out of reach. But now you can give them the jump-start they need!

Empower poor women in northern Ethiopia by helping us provide the gift of chickens, along with the training to raise them.

Gift Value:
One Chicken: $15

The Need in the Irob District, Northern Ethiopia:
Single mother family with their chickensIn northern Ethiopia, women approach life with an extreme disadvantage. Some are widows, some have been abandoned by their husbands, and others have fled abuse – but whatever the cause of their isolation, the result is the same: a losing battle to provide for their children. These women have no farm to cultivate, no livestock to raise, no education to offer opportunity, and no way to hold a job in a nearby town while caring for children at home. As a result, they struggle to provide the most basic household needs. Their children go hungry, and most never learn to read or write – in part, because they cannot afford school uniforms or supplies. With no other options, these families can only hope for handouts... or a miracle.

How Chickens can transform a woman, her family, and their future:
With the gift of 15 chickens, you can empower a poor woman to feed her family, to send her children to school, and to become a self-sufficient, productive member of society. Farm animals are a truly long-term, practical solution to rural poverty. Single mothers no longer have to beg for food or funds to feed their children; and once their animals begin to produce, they have a perpetual source of income that can grow over time, with little expense.

More about this program:
With your support, Cross Catholic Outreach and the Daughters of Charity can bless 60 out of the 72 of district's poorest female-headed households with chickens – a gift they can use to generate a regular income. This outreach is a long-term solution and an answer to their prayers for a better future. Women selected for this program are also empowered through an intense six-day training program. They learn how to feed and shelter the animals; how to prevent diseases and parasites; and how to conduct business transactions. The training also includes topics pertinent to the women's welfare such as gender issues and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for Chickens for Poor Single Mothers incurred through June 30, 2018, the close of our ministry’s new fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
