To Honor Cardinal Sean O’Malley and Archbishop Charles Chaput

Boca Raton, Florida (Thursday, February 20, 2014) —James J. Cavnar, president of Cross Catholic Outreach (a Catholic non-profit relief and development organization headquartered in Florida), attended the presentation of The Inaugural Pope Francis Award for Charity and Leadership which was given to His Eminence Cardinal Sean O’Malley, OFM, Archbishop of Boston, and His Eminence Charles J. Chaput, OFM, Archbishop of Philadelphia, on Monday, February 10. The award and ceremonies were hosted by Caritas in Veritate International-USA.

“We have the deepest respect for the charitable work that Caritas in Veritate International-USA does,” Mr. Cavnar said, “and we are proud to collaborate with them on charitable projects. It was a privilege to be in the presence of Cardinal O’Malley and Archbishop Chaput who have done so much for the poor and those in need. We look forward to future projects as part of our long-term collaboration with Caritas.

Caritas in Veritate International-USA’s founder and president Henry Cappello thanked Mr. Cavnar for Cross Catholic Outreach’s assistance to Caritas. In his remarks to the gathering, Mr. Cappello said, “Together we confront the different aspects of real poverty, or as Pope Francis calls it in his 2014 Lenten message, ‘the three aspects of Destitution,’ which affects those persons living in conditions opposed to human dignity, persons who are in vice and addiction and persons who are alienated from the Truth and refuse God’s Love.”

Mr. Cavnar was among the more than 100 people that attended the awards ceremony, including Catholic academic and foundation leaders, Catholic institutions, and friends of Caritas in Veritate International-USA. The ceremony took place at the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican Embassy, in Washington DC. The awards were given to Cardinal O’Malley and Archbishop Chaput because of their support of the work of Caritas in Veritate International-USA.
